Albie is twelve when his mother abandons him in favour of her latest man friend, and her parting shot of “gypsy brat” is his only clue to his father’s identity.
George, the owner of the helter-skelter on the pier in a Kent seaside town, adopts the homeless waif. Growing up in a loving home at last, Albie never abandons his search for his real father. Helter-Skelter takes the reader from a working class home in Kent to the battlefields of France, where Albie must rely on his gypsy instinct to keep himself and his friends safe. Elizabeth Young lives in Sussex. Each week she posts 100 words of flash fiction on her blog at http://lizy-writes.blogspot.co.uk You can also find Elizabeth on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/lizyoungwriter HELTER-SKELTER is an historical novel in which Albie, a boy abandoned by his mother, is adopted by the owner of a seaside helter-skelter, but still wants to track down the gypsy who fathered him. The story sees Albie grow to manhood in the 1920s and 1930s, and follows him to France in the early months of WW2. Later this year Liz plans to publish its sequel, CAROUSEL, which picks up Albie’s story ten years later. He is the father of a growing family when disaster strikes, and they all struggle to survive. Liz has also published her LIVING ROCK series, a four-book fantasy set in prehistoric times, when the Earth is still experimenting with different life-forms, and the dominant race is formed of volcanic rock. Their superior strength means the have few enemies, but their pliable rock bodies are extremely susceptible to cold. A VOLCANIC RACE, the first book, introduces Tomboro, whose psychic powers develop during his clan’s journey to find the volcano from which their next child will be born. Tomboro senses that his entire race is in danger, and foretells a disaster that is revealed in the final book of the series. And finally, for children – or for anyone who has ever owned a soft toy – Liz wrote and illustrated STRIPEY CAT & other poems – a book
of poems originally written for her own children and grandchildren. All Liz Young’s books are available on Amazon in print or e-book format. |
