Our judge, Maggie Cobbett, comments:
'Tern Off' is both cleverly written and very funny. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all the entries. An entry by Deborah Jones of Devon was hilarious. Please congratulate all your members for me on a fine effort. I'll be at the Writers' Summer School (Swanwick) as usual in August and hope to meet some of your members there.
Our thanks to Maggie for judging our competition. You can contact Maggie through her website www.maggiecobbett.co.uk
TERN OFF
written by Jane Allsop
There was a beautiful Morecambe Bay sunset at high tide tonight. The area by the nature reserve was teeming with upwards of 30 'twitchers' all kitted out with expensive photographic equipment, obviously excitedly anticipating the arrival of some rare sea bird.
As I drove by I thought it would only be polite and friendly to give them 3 cheery toots on the horn. I then watched in fascination at their appreciative response. They appeared almost to be taking flight, waving their arms in the air excitedly, each making the age-old sign indicating that they had just witnessed a skein of geese.
