Please find below our longlist for this competition.  We will be sending 20 of these entries to our judge Patsy.  If you are not on this list, please do not be disappointed.  We received many brilliantly interesting stories and it was difficult to pare the final list down to this and we still have yet to cut it down to 20.

Names of writers will be included after the announcement of results by the end of November.  Please don't announce the name of your entry if it's on this list on social media until final results have been announced.

To entrants of this competition not on this list please await an email from Debbie in the next few weeks with details of our forthcoming 2017 competition schedule.

Result for 'Mum' competition 2016

Thank you to all who submitted an entry to this free entry competition.

Second prize to this competition is a free entry to our Open Short Story Competition 2016 which closes in September.  A draw will be held soon and the name of every entrant to this competition who has requested to be in the draw, will be put into a hat and one drawn at random to win the second prize.

We found it difficult to choose only one winner out of all the excellent entries we received.  After much consideration, here is our shortlist (listed in order of receipt of entry):

I Am Beautiful - Olivia Lunn, Dublin
Female Executive - Mary Hodges, Lancashire
Tension - Patsy Collins, Hampshire
Washing Day with Mum - Lisa Williams, Leicestershire
Two Mothers - Bryan Thomas, Essex
Accident on the Forest Road - Tony Oswick, Essex
To My Mother - Sue Gerrard, Merseyside
Mum's Allotment - Julie Burke, Nottinghamshire
Strange Things in Handbags - Lorna Flanagan, County Armagh
My Mother's War - Janet Devereux, Derbyshire

WINNER - Julie Burke, Nottinghamshire with Mum's Allotment

Comments from our readers include:

Paints a vivid picture through a daughter's observation of her mother and her own daughter.

The two-fold effect of this piece of writing makes it stand out from all other entries.  It's both heart-warming yet chilling.

This brought tears to my eyes.

Winning Entry by Julie Burke

Mum’s Allotment

Ancient tendrils fiercely twist and shamble;

laden with jewel-bright bounty - snaking round

this once flawlessly cultivated ground.

All too soon your gardens fled to bramble.

Overwhelmed by nature as I ramble,

conjuring up the effervescent sound

of my own daughter’s delight as she found

luscious treasure in her playful scramble.

I could not recognize your loss of pace

as you and she were walking hand in hand;

one bent so low, the other reaching tall.

This creeping harvest, savage in demand,

leaves us bruised with slowly mouldering grace

to grasp precious memories where they fall.
